The Government renamed the Maternity Benefit Scheme

The Central Government has renamed the Matritva Sahyog Yojana” as “Pradhan Mantri Matritva Vandana Yojana (PMMVY)”.

This scheme is used to give Rs 6000 to pregnant and lactating mothers for the first live birth.

Key facts:

This is the second time that the scheme’s name has been changed.

When it was launched way back in 2010 it was called “Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana”.

Deep Ocean Mission – January 2018 

Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India is all set to launch ‘Deep Ocean Mission’ by January 2018. This will improve India’s position in ocean research field.

Key facts:

India was the first country in the world to have been given the Pioneer Area for exploration of deep-sea mineral viz. Polymetallic nodules in the Central Indian Ocean Basin in 1987.

This was based on the extensive surveys carried out by the scientists of CSIR-NIO.

International Day of UN Peacekeepers

May 29th is the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

The International Day of Peacekeepers serves to honour the memory of UN Peacekeepers who have lost their lives, and pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in UN peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication and courage.

The theme for the 2017 International Day of UN Peacekeepers is “Investing in Peace around the World”.

What you need to know about UN Peacekeeping?

United Nations Peacekeeping was created in 1948.

Its first mission involved the establishment of the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), which served to observe and maintain ceasefire during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

UN Peacekeeping maintains three basic principles:

Consent of the parties, impartiality and non-use of Force except in self-defence and defence of the mandate.

The UN Peacekeeping Force won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1988.

Goa Statehood Day: 30 May

Goa Statehood Day is observed on May 30.

On this day, in 1987, Goa terminated to be a Union Territory and became the 25th State of the Union of India.

Key facts:

Goa was liberated from the colonial rule in December 1961.

In 1967, an opinion poll was held, the only such referendum in independent India.

It decided that Goa, Daman and Diu should remain a separate entity with the status of a Union Territory.

On this day, in 1987, Goa terminated to be a Union Territory and became the 25th State of the Union of India.

Darwaza Band – Free National campaign for open defecation 

Union Ministry for Drinking Water and Sanitation, Government of India, launched a new campaign titled ‘Darwaza Band’ to promote toilet use and freedom from open defecation across the country’s villages.

Key facts:

This campaign is led by Shri Amitabh Bachchan.

An exhibition displaying various toilet technologies was also put up.

The ‘Darwaza Band’ campaign has been supported by the World Bank and is being rolled out countrywide immediately after the launch.

A part of the campaign also features actor, Ms Anushka Sharma, who will be seen encouraging women to stand up for this issue in their villages and assume a leadership role.
