Sentence Pattern

 

Subject: The person who does the action in the sentence

 

Verb: The word that indicates an action done by the subject or expresses a state of being or show possession

 

Complement: The word or phrase which completes the meaning is called a complement. It is of two kind as ‘subject complement’ and ‘object complement’.

 

Object: The word which receives the action from the subject is the object of the sentence.

 

Direct object: In a sentence, the object which answers for the question ‘what’ is called direct object.

 

Indirect object: In a sentence, the object which answers for the question ‘to whom’ is called indirect object.

 

Adjunct: Adjunct is a word or group of words which provides answers to the questions ‘How’, ’Why’, ’When’ or ‘Where’

 

Important Sentence pattern:

SV (Subject + Verb)

SVO (Subject + Verb + Object)

SV IO DO (Subject + Verb + Indirect Object + Direct Object)

SVC (Subject + Verb + Complement)

SVOC (Subject + Verb + Object + Complement)
