World Winter Games 2017

World Winter Games 2017, also known as Special Olympics, was held in Austria.

Austria, in 1993, became the first country outside the US to host the Special Olympics World Winter Games.

What is the Special Olympics?

The Special Olympics comprise a group of athletic competitions for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

The competition is held every two years, alternating between the Special Olympics World Summer Games and the Special Olympics World Winter Games.

Performance of India:

India finished its campaign at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria with a total of 73 medals, which included 37 gold medals, 10 silvers and 26 bronze.

Background: 

The Special Olympics are the brainchild of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who is the sister of former US president John F Kennedy.

Shriver had organised informal sports events in her backyard in an effort to bring joy and a sense of belonging to those with intellectual disabilities for many years.

After that, she arranged the first Special Olympics World Games in 1968 in Chicago, where around 1,000 athletes from the US and Canada participated.

Vanita Gupta appointed President of Leadership Conferene

Indian-American Vanita Gupta has been appointed as president and CEO of ‘The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights’, becoming the first woman to head the prestigious organization.

She will replace Wade Henderson who is stepping down after more than two decades. She will begin her new role on June 1, 2017.

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is also called as Leadership Conference was founded in 1950 at Washington.

Jurist TR Andhyarujina Passed Away

Senior Advocate and eminent jurist Tehmtan R. Andhyarujina passed away.

He was the Solicitor General of India from 1996 to 1998.

Dr. B.C. Roy National Awards and Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Awards

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee presented Dr. B. C. Roy National Awards for the years 2014, 2015 and 2016 and Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Awards for the years 2008, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016 at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on March 28, 2017.

Dr. B.C. Roy Award is given in each of the following categories: Statesmanship of the Highest Order in India, Medical man-cum-Statesman, Eminent Medical Person, Eminent person in Philosophy, Eminent person in Science and Eminent person in Arts.

Three doctors from Tamil Nadu have been awarded the prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy National Award and two others received the Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Award.

Awardees from Tamil Nadu:

Dr. B.C. Roy National Awards:

Geethalakshmi – Vice Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University was given the award in the recognition of her outstanding services in the field of socio medical relief for 2016.

C. Palanivelu – Chairman of Coimbatore-based GEM Hospital received the award in the eminent medical person category for 2015.

This is the second time Dr. Palanivelu has got the award — he got it the first time in 2006 in the speciality development category.

Anand K. Khakhar – Programme director, Centra for Liver Diseases and Transplantation at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai received the award for the recognition of best talents in encouraging the development of specialities in different branches in medicine category, also for 2015.

Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Awards:

S. Rajasekaran – Chairman, department of orthopaedics, Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore was given the Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Award for 2008.

P. Sundaresan – Senior scientist and head of the Genetics department at the Aravind Medical Research foundation, Madurai received the Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Award for 2010.
