Successful Test Firing of AAD Endo-Atmospheric Interceptor Missile

DRDO recently conducted the successful launch of the interceptor missile Advanced Area Defence (AAD) from Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha.

Key facts:

The AAD is part of the two-layered Ballistic Missile Defence system developed by the DRDO, the research and development wing of the Defence Ministry, with the Hyderabad-based Research Centre Imaarat (RCI).

The endo-atmospheric missile is capable of intercepting incoming targets at an altitude of 15 to 25 kms.

Background:

AAD further validates the reliability of the under-development, two-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) in shooting down enemy missiles.

The BMD consists of two interceptor missiles, the Prithvi Defence Vehicle (PDV) for exo-atmospheric ranges and the Advanced Area Defence (AAD) missile for endo-atmosphere or lower altitudes.

The BMD is critical to protect the country from the long-range ballistic missiles proliferating in the neighbourhood.

Deepak has been appointed as country’s permanent representative to World Trade Organization (WTO).

The appointment order has been issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by the Prime Minister.

IAS officer Ajay Tyagi is appointed as new chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on 2 March 2017.

He has replaced Mr. U.K Sinha.

Ammakalviyagam Portal

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam launched a portal which will be a hub of learning, interaction, opportunity, and connection.

The ‘ammakalviyagam.in’, named after late chief minister Jayalalithaa, was launched by Panneerselvam as part of her 69th birth anniversary celebrations.

ISSF World Cup Shooting – Gold for India – Jitu Rai

Jitu Rai wins Gold in 50m free pistol in ISSF World Cup Shooting in New Delhi.

Indian shooter Amanpreet Singh won a silver medal in the same event.

Some Facts:

Earlier in this edition of world cup, Rai also won Bronze medal in 10m air pistol event.

In the 10m Air Pistol mixed team event, Jitu Rai and Heena Sidhu had clinched the gold medal.

Women’s Boxing Championship in India

India will host the World Women’s Youth Boxing Championship in November this year, the first major international event to be held in the country since 2010.

In 2010, India had hosted the Commonwealth Championships followed by the Commonwealth Games.

Al Nagah-II 2017

India and Oman are conduct their second bilateral exercise “Al Nagah-II” 2017 for their armies.

The aim of the exercise is to build and promote bilateral Army-to-Army relations and enhance interoperability while exchanging skills and experiences.

The navies are holding the bilateral maritime exercises called ‘Naseem Al Bahr’ since 1993.

International Yoga Festival

The 29th International Yoga Festival was inaugurated by Uttarakhand Governor KK Paul in Rishikesh.

The week-long event, jointly organised by the AYUSH ministry and Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board, will feature classes on meditation, reiki and Indian philosophy during the festival.

The Delhi Government has extended the mid-day meal scheme for girls up to class 12.
